Why Single Pores and skin Sports activities Betting Might Prohibit Ohio, New York Markets

A regulatory model that could restrict the sports betting market Ohio and new York will be checked in both states.

Senate sponsors of a sports betting bill in Ohio surprised the industry when they mentioned that their latest draft would include only one skin per casino / Racino in the state. That fell off three each in September and two every last month.

Sports betting in New York is of course legal, but the state has long been into legalizing cell phones. That could change this year, said the Senate sponsor Joe Addabbo this week during one Sports America betting Conference panel. Given Governor Andrew CuomoAddabbo has been against mobile betting in the past and said it was best to start negotiations with one skin per property.

While there was hope that Ohio will legalize this year, both states now appear to be longshots.

The odds for sports betting in Ohio look longer

Ohio Sens. John Eklund and Sean O’Brien Perhaps with their latest draft they wiped out the chances of legalizing sports betting this year.

The two touted a draft in which “not one” proponent of sports betting got everything they asked for, Eklund said. This is especially true for betting providers who praised the expected multi-skin market in a written testimony to the Senate.

This includes several skins that Eklund left out to avoid an increase in gambling in the state:

“We have the good authority of people I trust that multiple brands can be a real problem. So we suggest sticking to one online brand per location, with the idea that adding more brands can be done with a simple change of statute as it becomes important or beneficial to the Ohio state population down the street. “

Requests for comments from Eklund on what this “real multi-brand problem” might be were not returned.

The Ohio Sports Betting Draft widens the gap with House

The new proposal could have created too great a difference between the House of Representatives and the Senate to legalize sports betting by the end of 2020.

Dan Dodd |, VP of Government Relations at ZHF advicesaid he was surprised at the changes.

“When you talk about a void that is widening in a lame duck session, if you hope it will be bridged instead, I think it’s harder to get something done in the last week or two,” Dodd said .

Adding more licenses in the future won’t be easy either, Dodd suspects. Once you’ve legalized a single-skin model, Dodd says you’re increasing the number of companies invested in such a model, making lobbying for additional skins a lot harder.

“I think it would take years to increase the number of skins,” said Dodd.

Gural: I’m not sure why there are smaller sports bets at all.

Jeff Gural holds one of the most interesting positions in sports betting. He runs the Meadowlands Racetrack in the New Jersey and owns Tioga Downs in the new YorkSo he sees firsthand the enormous inequality between the two countries.

about $ 300 million was bet online through the Meadowlands’ partners October, $ 100 million Those were New York people, Gural said on a panel about betting on Sports America. New Jersey set one of the US records $ 803 million under control for October.

Although Gural has multiple partners in New Jersey, he only prefers one skin per property in New York.

“Personally, I think we’d be better off with a skin because I honestly don’t understand why some of these companies even exist, they do so little business,” Gural told LSR.

That being said, having more than one skin isn’t a deal breaker for him at this point.

“We might have resisted [multiple skins] last year but this is an emergency right now and we have to do what is in the best interests of the state and try to get them out of this crisis, ”Gural said.

Surprised New York without a cell phone

Gural has entered into a partnership with the US market leader FanDuel Sports Betting in both states. But without a cell phone, business at Tioga Downs is a long way from what the Meadowlands do.

“Very little [handle]not very much at all, ”said Gural. “Very disappointing. I think most of the people up there are illegal betting or going to Pennsylvania.”

He said he never expected to be in that position when he won a full New York casino license in 2016:

“I thought we could convince lawmakers that this made sense. It’s not about whether you believe sports betting is good or bad. All you do is move from an industry where people either bet illegally or go to New Jersey or Pennsylvania to an industry that is state taxed and regulated.

“I find it hard to believe that anyone would think it would be better to have it the way it is now. That’s crazy. I just don’t think they understand how many people bet illegally. “

Not everyone agrees to a skin in New York

Rep. Gary Pretlowwho fought for mobile New York sports betting on the other side of the Addabbo Chamber, wants more than a skin.

“I know some of the casinos only advocate a skin because they are greedy. They think they can be their own bookmaker. I don’t think they are,” Pretlow said during the BOSA panel. “You don’t have to use everything [available skins], nothing that says you have to do it, but at least you have the option to do it. “

Addabbo told LSR that he had thought about what would be most marketable in the negotiation process. He’s not against allowing more skins if that passes the bill, he added.

“This is an important point on the bill so we’ll see,” said Addabbo. “I’ll have my discussions with my team, I’ll have my discussions with Gary Pretlow, and see what we can move forward.”

Other details more important than skins?

Just because a status is available for entry doesn’t mean every operator is interested.

The best case study on this is Tennesseewhich only has four live operators, of which at least four are still outstanding.

Tennessee doesn’t limit licenses, which means that anyone who has been approved can run a mobile sportsbook. However, the state also demands a minimum of from the operators 10% annually – which is unprecedented in the USA – together with one 20% Tax rate, $ 750,000 annual license fee and an official league data request.

This has led to a low level of interest in the state for most of the operators. On the other hand in Virginia, there are 25th Applicants for at most seven unbound mobile licenses and five Licenses tied to casinos.

The Virginia model is much more user-friendly. Pay sports betting $ 250,000 for a three year license and are taxed with 15%.
